According to chronicles, long before the baptism of Rus, there was a pagan shrine at this site, where round dances were held and people jumped over bonfires on Kupala night. The Church of Elijah the Prophet on Ivanova Hill is located in Suzdal on a small hill, in the bend of the Kamenka River, opposite the Suzdal Kremlin. This monument of Suzdal architecture dates back to the mid-18th century. The stone Elijah Church was built in 1744 on the site of a wooden church that was moved from the western side of the settlement by the order of Metropolitan Illarion of Suzdal.

The building stands on the edge of the Ilyinsky meadow, where the archbishop's settlement once was. In the 18th century, a small Church of John the Theologian was located near the Elijah Church, captured in a photograph from 1912 by Prokudin-Gorsky. During the Soviet period, the Church of John the Theologian, as well as the refectory and bell tower of the Elijah Church, were destroyed. The church, which stood for more than two centuries, was blown up in 1937, and its ruins remained abandoned until the beginning of this century. Only the stone box with remnants of the drum has survived.

A reconstruction plan for the church was created in the 1970s, but it was only implemented in the early 21st century. In 2010, the bell tower and refectory were fully restored. The Elijah Church, without columns and with a single onion dome, is an example of a settlement church from the first half of the 18th century. The main volume is represented by an octagon on a square base, with pilasters at the corners, the window frames of the first floor made in the form of crowns, and the windows of the second tier having semicircular finishes. An octagonal structure, decorated with rustication at the corners, is located on the four-pitched roof, and the upper part of the window frames features triple ovals.

The vaulted ceiling of the interior of the Elijah Church represents one of the varieties of systems used by local architects. The massive octagon is set on a closed vault that covers the large cube of the central building of the monument, which is unique for Suzdal. The facades of the church are painted a yellowish color with white decorative elements.

In honor of the Great Victory over fascism, parishioners of the Church of Elijah the Prophet on Ivanova Hill planted an apple orchard on May 9, 2010, with the blessing of Archbishop Evlogy of Vladimir and Suzdal, supported by the leaders of the Suzdal district and the city of Suzdal, M.N. Ivanov and O.K. Guseva. The orchard contains 65 apple trees, each dedicated to veterans of the Great Patriotic War and honorary citizens of Suzdal. The care of the orchard is carried out by the parish of the Church of Elijah the Prophet of the Vladimir-Suzdal Diocese, which also distributes the fruits to residents and guests of the city. The apple trees, grown by Vladimir Dmitrievich Rudisv, were planted at three years of age on the Holy Land of Suzdal.
