In 1834, a site for a church was designated on the general plan of Shuya in a new rectangular square in Zarechye. The development of the urban area in the industrial zone anticipated the creation of new blocks along the river for industrial and residential buildings. Revolution Square, located opposite the main bridge over the Teza, was to become the compositional center of Zarechye, continuing the axis of Soviet Street. At the site where the church was planned in 1834, a chapel was initially built and consecrated in 1880. Soon after, a church was erected and consecrated in its place in 1881. The bell tower was originally wooden, while the church itself was made of brick and unplastered. The dome was painted blue with golden stars. Above the southern doors was an image of the Prophet Elijah ascending in a fiery chariot. In the early 20th century, a large narthex was added to the church, along with a fence and a watchman's lodge. In the 1910s, the church was plastered.

The Ilyinskaya Church is a five-domed temple with a tented bell tower, characteristic of the 17th century. The two-light square was topped with five decorative domes. It is adjoined by a narrow five-sided apse and a rectangular refectory with a narthex, forming a longitudinal axial composition. Two tiers of the bell tower, crowned with a tent, previously rose above the refectory. The facades of the church are adorned with panelled pilasters and cornices with teeth and a ledge. Initially, the openings had an arched shape and were framed with casings with a keel-shaped top. The western facade of the narthex is more expressive: the arched passage is flanked by semi-columns supporting a large archivolt with dentils. The square, covered with a vaulted ceiling, connects with the apse and refectory through wide arched openings. The apse is covered with five vaults, while the refectory has a barrel vault. The plaster finish of the square's vault has been preserved. The brick fence consists of low panels and square pillars with an iron grille. The panels and pillars are decorated with niches, and the pillars have four-pitched roofs. The fence includes a brick watchman's lodge with an originally designed facade resembling a gate with a curved pediment. Currently, the northeastern part of the church is connected to the former service buildings, and the tented bell tower and decorative domes have been lost. The western part of the fence with the main entrance has been destroyed. The volume of the church appears 'sunken' after the elevation of the roadway of the October Bridge. The church was assigned to the Nikolai-Shartomski Monastery and was unprofitable. It had one hieromonk, one hierodeacon, and two novices serving in it. The church was closed in 1924, and a factory club was located inside the former temple.
