Church of the Prophet Elijah in Klyuchevo, Sergach

The church in the former village of Klyuchevo was destroyed in the 1930s, but in 2003 it was restored in forms reminiscent of the church built in 1855.

In the village of Klyuchevo, there were two wooden churches for a long time: one in honor of the prophet Elijah and the other in honor of Saints Cosmas and Damian. The Elijah church was rebuilt in 1733 and consecrated in 1734 by the order of Archbishop Pitirim of Nizhny Novgorod and Alatyr, by Priest Athanasius. This church served for about a hundred years.

By 1848, both churches had significantly deteriorated, especially the Cosmas and Damian church. On July 4, 1848, at a general meeting, the residents of Klyuchevo and the village of Mokry Maydan decided to build a new stone church with funds raised from voluntary donations. This decision was reviewed by the Klyuchevo village administration by elder Ivan Mamonov. He was to send a petition from the church elder Mikhail Paramonov to His Grace Yakov, Bishop of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas. Until October, the documents passed through various instances, and on October 14, 1848, a decision was made to construct a stone church in the Byzantine style in the village of Klyuchevo.
