Church of the Icon of the Mother of God 'Sign' in Znamensk (Vladimir Region)

The Znamensk church gives quite an official impression, as it was built during the period of widespread classicism in provincial architecture. The rough square columns of the base stand out, replacing the traditional round ones. Perhaps they were not made evenly or the construction was rushed, but this remains unclear. The uniform weathering of the brick on the bell tower's bases indicates the dishonesty of material suppliers, which is often linked to contractors. It is likely that the church was built in stages. For example, the refectory was probably added later than the main building, as evidenced by its flat reinforced concrete vaults, which only became popular by the end of the 19th century when cement became cheaper and builders mastered working with it. Currently, the church is in a state of emergency. During the Soviet period, the floors were damaged, roofs and openings were lost, and heaters were destroyed. The church is open. The congregation is very weak, and in the temple, one or two women have created a small prayer corner from a tablecloth and a few icons.
