The village of Znamensk was originally named 'Ryazansky Pochinok'. The term 'pochinok' comes from the word 'pochin', meaning beginning, and usually represented a single peasant yard. The name 'Ryazansky' likely refers to settlers from the Ryazan region. After the church was built, the village was renamed Znamensk, as the church's altar was dedicated to the icon 'The Sign of the Most Holy Theotokos'.

The Church of the Icon of the Mother of God 'Sign' was constructed in 1791. This wooden structure was built with funds from the landowner Alexander Ivanovich Bakhmetyev. In 1879, the refectory and bell tower were reconstructed.
