The year of construction of the old church in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in the village of Chelny-Vershiny is not precisely established, but it is known to have occurred between 1855 and 1910. The church was wooden, with five domes and a tall bell tower. Nearby was a burial ground where clergy, their families, and respected villagers were buried. Locals recall that the church had two chapels. The right chapel was consecrated in honor of John the Theologian, which is why the church was sometimes named after him. It is known that the church had two choirs: the left for the Chuvash choir and the right for the Russian choir. Many people attended the services, including from neighboring villages.

In 1931, the church was closed, the burial ground was desecrated, and the crosses and gravestones were destroyed. In early 1932, the building was converted into a cinema and library, the domes and crosses were removed, and the bell tower was demolished. In the late 50s and early 60s, the building was demolished due to its dilapidated condition.

With the revival of Orthodoxy in the late 20th century, at the initiative of believers, a prayer house was opened in Chelny-Vershiny. In 2001, Father Alexiy laid the foundation for a new church, and Father Alexander Poltaev continued the construction. The church was built on donations from parishioners and with the support of various enterprises. The construction was completed in 2003. The church was built in honor of the Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos 'Sign' based on a design inspired by one of the ancient wooden monasteries of northern Russia, developed by the Kirov design bureau. A baptistery, prosphora room, refectory, and a room for parishioners to rest were built next to the church, and flowerbeds were arranged around it.
