The Sign Stone Church is located near the Varni, on Bolshaya Street, which leads from the fortress to the Yaroslavl exit. This temple combines two churches: the Friday Church and the Elevation Church. The first of them existed in the early 17th century and was located on the banks of the Volga; it was a cold wooden church. The 1674 inventory mentions that it was dilapidated, and the Volga had eroded its altar. At the request of priest Fyodor and the parishioners, a new site was allocated for the church. The church was richly decorated, and next to it was a warm wooden church of St. Tikhon the Wonderworker, but there was no bell tower, only one bell hung on the chapel.

In the mid-17th century, the treasurer of Patriarch Nikon, Tikhon Obanin from Balakhna, built a new warm church in the name of the Sign of the Mother of God with an altar of St. Tikhon and a bell tower with four bells. The Sign Church, relocated to another site, burned down on February 13, 1745. After that, merchant Pyotr Semyonovich Latukhin, a wealthy salt industrialist and supplier of state goods in St. Petersburg, purchased a plot for the church and in 1748 built a stone temple in the name of the Sign of the Mother of God with an altar of St. Paraskeva Friday, according to the church foundation charter of Archbishop Antoniy from Vladimir. In 1795, due to a decrease in population, the nearby Elevation Church was annexed to this church. Previously, it stood on the banks of the Neticha River, was wooden, with an altar of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God and a bell tower. In the mid-17th century, a new wooden church with five domes was built, while the old Kazan Church remained warm. Due to its dilapidation, another warm church of the martyr Artemius was erected.

In the early 18th century, a stone Elevation Church with an altar in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was built on the site of these three temples. In 1748, there were 26 households at the Sign Church and 29 at the Elevation Church. Currently, these united churches have one staff, with 208 male and 261 female parishioners. A procession is held in this church from the cathedral on July 8.

On August 8, 2013, the building was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church, and on August 19, the first Divine Liturgy was held, conducted by the rector, Archpriest Nikolai Khazov. Since then, services and sacraments have been held regularly in the church. Restoration work and the consecration of the church were completed in 2014. From April to December, icon painters from the diocesan workshop performed the interior painting. In September, the dome drum and dome were installed, and on October 4, the cross. On December 25, the rite of the Great Consecration was led by Metropolitan Georgiy of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas.
