The church dedicated to the Icon of the Mother of God 'Sign' was built in 1801 and served as the winter church for the parish of the Church of the Holy Trinity. It had two chapels: the right one in honor of Saints Guriy and Varsonofy, the Kazan miracle workers, and the left one in honor of St. Theodosius of Totma.

During the Soviet period, the church building housed a planetarium, and later a bank. In the early 2000s, the Sign Church was transferred to the Holy Spirit parish.

On November 13, 2010, Archbishop Georgiy of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas conducted the consecration ceremony of the church in honor of the Icon of the Mother of God 'Sign.'
