V.A. Sollogub once recalled his acquaintance with Arzamas, noting: "I have seen many churches in Moscow, but in Arzamas, apart from churches, I saw nothing else. The little houses disappear under majestic domes, bell towers, and spires. Arzamas, a city of Orthodoxy. Before it, a Russian person cannot help but cross themselves." One of the churches adorning the Cathedral Square of Arzamas, alongside the Resurrection Cathedral, is the temple in honor of the Icon of the Mother of God 'Life-Giving Spring.' The Resurrection Cathedral was built as a cold church, suitable for services only in warm weather, approximately from Easter to the Feast of the Protection. Next to it, a warm church in the name of the Icon of the Mother of God 'Life-Giving Spring' was erected in 1794 on the site of an old stone church. From 1813 to 1842, it served as the main church for the residents of Arzamas during the construction of the Resurrection Cathedral.

N.M. Shchegolkov, the author of the monograph 'Historical Information about the City of Arzamas,' wrote about the church's renovation in 1823: "Extreme necessity forced a major renovation of the warm cathedral, which, although built only 30 years ago, had greatly deteriorated and required immediate repairs, which were carried out over one summer." In the church, in addition to the main altar, two chapels were consecrated in the name of Archangel Michael and the Venerable Sergius and Herman of Valaam. Closed in the 1930s, the church reopened in November 1944 along with the Resurrection Cathedral.
