Church of the Icon of the Mother of God 'Joy of All Who Sorrow' in Sholge

A small stone church, located on an elevation of the left bank of the Yug River, was designed to be visible from afar, but is now completely hidden in the greenery of an overgrown cemetery grove. The architectural design of the church is based on the plan and facade of the 'church for His Imperial Majesty's own dacha' from the fourth album of projects by architect K.A. Ton.

The forms and decor of the church are executed in an eclectic style. The two-light square with a traditional five-domed structure is built in the style of pillarless churches. The main volume at the level of the lower light is complemented by a three-part apse of complex nine-sided shape with a trapezoidal projection in the center and a narrow narthex connecting to the vestibule arranged in the lower tier of the bell tower. The two-tiered bell tower, closely adjoining the western wall of the church, is the same height as the church itself. The porch in the form of a portico on two columns has not survived. The silhouette of the monument is expressive due to the low spire of the bell tower with an original top in the form of a multi-faceted 'barrel' with a flattened dome and a high decorative drum with large domes. The gable motif, common for the completion of the walls of all parts of the building, with varying slopes of the slopes and ornate wrought-iron crosses complement the composition of the church.

The northern and southern facades of the square are divided into three parts by stepped pilasters with a slight overhang of the wider central part. Here, arched windows are arranged in two tiers, united by a common architrave with a two-mold profile. The lower openings are additionally decorated with perspective recesses and three width strips. The decor of the facades includes arcature belts of the drums, arched spans of the bells with small bread loaves along the lines of the archivolts, modest cornice pulls, and corner pilasters.

A feature of the planning and structural solution is the thickening of the corner sections of the square, which allowed for the concentration of the load from the small domes, to take the thrust from the deaf eight-part vault, and to relieve the walls, making them sufficiently thin. Two Dutch stoves are rationally embedded in the western pylons. The altar space, which includes open oval-shaped areas of the altar and deacon's room, is covered with conchs that transition into troughs. Above the vestibule and narthex are cylindrical vaults.

This monument is of undeniable interest as the only cult building of this type in the area with a non-standard volumetric-planning solution.
