The church, located at the New or Voronov cemetery in the city of Kozlov-Michurinsk, was built with the funds of merchant Ivan Ivanovich Voronov. On May 30, 1806, a chapel in honor of the icon of Saint Prophet and Forerunner John was consecrated in the church at the cemetery of the Mother of God of Sorrows. In May 1809, a third altar in honor of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos 'Joy of All Who Sorrow' was consecrated. On November 22, 1858, the church established its own clergy; before that, services were conducted by priests from the Ilyinsk and Storozhevsk Nicholas churches. By 1902, the altar of the Kazan icon of the Mother of God was abolished, and by 1911, the church became a single-altar church. On April 21, 1898, Bishop Alexander appointed Mikhail Trofimovich Bogoroditsky as the priest of this church, and he was ordained on June 7. He was canonized in 2004.

On December 31, 1938, a resolution was approved to close the Novokladbishchenskaya church in Michurinsk for demolition. On January 28, 1940, it was decided to dismantle the church for the needs of the construction of the city industrial complex. However, the church remained intact; only the bell tower was dismantled. On October 15, 1943, at the request of the faithful, the church building was leased with the condition of repairs at the community's expense. The priest Alexander Mikhailovich Lebedev became the rector. For a long time, the temple was the only spiritual center for the residents of Michurinsk and the surrounding areas.

Since 2007, restoration work on the temple began, and on March 28, 2012, the restoration of the bell tower commenced according to the project of Nikolai Andreevich Averochkin. The temple is associated with the name of schemamonk Seraphima, who labored here during the years of persecution. Her remains rest near the church. Since 1998, a chapel has stood over her grave, built by the efforts of Archpriest Alexander Filimonov. Grateful residents paved the path from the church to the grave. Many come here for spiritual help and comfort, especially on October 5, the day of the ascetic's repose.
