The village of Shmitovka was founded in 1791 by Lieutenant Colonel Andrei von Schmit and named in his honor. The history of the village took on a romantic hue when a wealthy landowner, Nikolai Apollonovich Aristov, came to Shmitovo and met a beautiful serf girl who was deeply religious. He proposed to her, but she agreed only on the condition that he build a church in the village. In early 1830, the construction of the church began under the guidance of Aristov himself. The serf peasants made bricks from local clay and fired them on-site. The construction lasted more than 30 years, from 1830 to 1867, and the finishing works were particularly difficult due to a lack of labor after the 1861 reform, when many peasants left the village. The church was opened in 1869. The main altar was consecrated in honor of the Mother of God 'Joy of All Who Sorrow' on September 5, 1872, and the side altars, in honor of the Nativity of Christ on December 28, 1869, and Saint Nicholas on October 5, 1872. The first priest was Stefan Yakovlevich Konstantinovsky, and in 1887, Father Georgy Orfenov was appointed as the rector. In 1890, some residents purchased 100 desyatins of land from Aristov and founded the village of Shmitovka, which later merged with Andreevka. The residents engaged in agriculture and beekeeping, and the village housed the volost administration. The church operated until 1930, after which it housed a stable, a tractor garage, and a grain storage facility. The Bolsheviks attempted to blow up the church, but unsuccessfully. It is said that egg whites were added to the mortar during construction, which were brought in from the surrounding area. In 1990, the church was returned to the Ufa diocese in a severely damaged condition. In 1992, the church was temporarily named the Nativity of Christ in honor of one of the restored side altars. During the restoration work, heating and electricity were installed, floors, windows, and doors were set up, and the domes and roof were repaired. The outer walls, bricks, patterns, and corners of the church are being restored, and downspouts are being installed. Work is also ongoing on the bell tower and inside the church. Funding is provided by occasional benefactors. Other chapels and altars have not yet been restored due to a lack of funds and manpower. From 1990 to March 1995, the church had two rectors, and since March 1995, it has been led by Archpriest Alexey Barmenko. Currently, Father Andrey Bezrukov is the rector. The village also has a sisterhood of the Holy Royal Martyrs under the guidance of Abbess Eutropia Moskalev.
