The church in honor of the holy great martyr George was moved to Shomokhta in 1922 from the Vysokovsky Assumption Male Monastery, which was located a few kilometers from the village. By that time, the monastery had become small in number, which is attributed to its remoteness from large settlements and the fact that it was of the same faith.
On the monastery grounds, the church dedicated to the holy great martyr George was built and consecrated in 1834.
The wooden structure of the church, transported to Shomokhta and rebuilt, has survived to this day.
