The metropolitan chambers, known since the 16th century as the archimandrite's cells, were rebuilt at the end of the 17th century. In 1778, the upper floor and the main northern facade were extensively remodeled in the Baroque style at the initiative of Metropolitan Platon. Partial restoration of the building took place in 1938-1939 and in 1945 under the guidance of Trofimov. Due to the features of the terrain, the building has two floors on one side and three on the other. Elements of the 17th century have been preserved on the rear and side facades, such as framed window surrounds and a frieze of relief polychrome tiles. The Baroque decoration of the front facade includes ornate window frames, abundant stucco with cartouches, and a portico with columns supporting a balcony with a wrought-iron railing. The open layout and vaulted spaces of the lower floors have retained their original appearance. The grand upper rooms are adorned with stucco and painting, mainly on the vaults. The Tsar's and the Patriarch's chambers, converted into a church, are particularly richly decorated with large tiled stoves made of painted tiles. In the 19th century, during the renovation of the interiors, some rooms had their fabric wallpapers and stucco replaced with plaster 'under marble.'

The domestic church in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was established in the Patriarch's chambers in 1758. In 1793, it was re-consecrated in honor of Peter and Paul. Its preserved interior decoration and iconostasis, created by I.M. Malyshev, date back to 1868. In 1880, the church was again dedicated to the Kazan Mother of God, but it was closed in 1918. Upon its revival in 1949, the church was consecrated in the name of Philaret the Merciful.

The 'Metropolitan Chambers' in the 'Trinity-Sergius Lavra Monastery' complex are a federal cultural heritage site.
