On December 6, 2013, in Petrozavodsk, with the blessing of Metropolitan Manuil of Petrozavodsk and Karelia, a minor consecration of the Church of St. Great Martyr Catherine took place. This building, constructed in 1877 according to the design of engineer M.I. Markov, is a cultural heritage site of regional significance. The church was erected in honor of the centenary of the renaming of the Petrozavodsk sloboda into a city by the decree of Empress Catherine II. The city Duma provided timber for construction, while funds for the building came from benefactors. Throughout its history, including the Soviet period, the church has been used for its intended purpose.

On the night of May 12-13, 2012, the wooden church suffered significant damage from a fire. Restoration work lasted for a year and a half. In the summer of 2012, specialists from LLC 'Exiton' dismantled the cladding, removed the charred parts, and installed a temporary roof, after which the building was ventilated and dried. The restoration project was developed by Karelia's architect-restorers T.I. Vakhromeyeva and V.G. Kopnin, and funding for the project documentation amounting to 1.2 million rubles was allocated from the republican budget. The remaining work was financed by the parish and benefactors, for which a special fund was created. Total expenses amounted to about 20 million rubles. The restoration was carried out by specialists from St. Petersburg, the company 'PGS II'.

Currently, the main restoration work is completed, but according to the rector of the church, Father Andrei Vereshchagin, much remains to be done. It is necessary to conduct communications, build a boiler house, improve the territory and cemetery, as well as restore the iconostasis, which was damaged by moisture and temperature fluctuations. Only after this will the Great Consecration of the church take place.

The minor consecration was conducted by Archpriest Ioann Terenyak, and more than a hundred parishioners attended the service. The rector thanked everyone who helped in the restoration, including parishioners, benefactors, and volunteers, and presented letters of gratitude and commemorative albums with photographs of the restoration stages to the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Karelia E.V. Bogdanova, the Deputy Minister of Culture N.V. Demidova, the First Deputy Minister for National Policy V.G. Krasnozhon, the Minister for Youth Affairs, Physical Culture, and Sports A.M. Voronov, and the Chief Architect of the city V.N. Kuspak. Father Andrei expressed special gratitude to the restorers: architects, engineers, foremen, and workers. The role of the media was also noted, as it helped make assistance and fundraising widespread.
