Church of St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki in Tolba

Фото 1
The wooden church dedicated to the great martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki was built in 1620. After a fire in 1824, a stone church was constructed with funds from the parishioners, which became one of the best in the Sergach district of Nizhny Novgorod province.

In 1936, the church was closed, and the clergy were disbanded. In 1958, the dome and bell tower were destroyed, as the building was decided to be used as a club. The residents of the village of Tolba opposed the destruction but could not prevent it.

Currently, the church is being restored after many years of neglect. The initiator of the restoration was Mikhail Kozakov from the Sergach district. In 2010, Father Dmitry Bezumnov, assistant to the dean of the Sergach district, was appointed as the rector of the church. On July 8, 2010, the first service in 70 years took place.

An initial estimate of the construction work was made, and preliminary assessments suggest that the restoration of the church will take at least three years.
