In 2010, a new church was consecrated in the village of Staro-Khmelevoye in the Michurinsk district in honor of the great martyr Demetrius of Thessalonica.

The village of Staro-Khmelevoye was founded in 1636-1637 when the Kozlovsky voivode Ivan Birkin allocated land plots to the future residents and designated meadows and forest lands.

Later, in 1651-1652, Prince Nesvitsky compiled a description of the Khmelevaya sloboda, as the village was then called: "The Khmelevaya sloboda on the river, on the Polny Voronezh, behind the local atamans, and in it the church of Dmitry Selunitsky. Behind the local atamans, arable land, land from the wild field, and meadows are secured. In total, there are 71 ataman households in the Khmelevaya sloboda, with 240 people. The plowed fields are good lands, 544 quarters, and wild fields for plowing 2597 quarters." In the documents of the revision of 1719-1722, there were 77 houses of one-dweller families in the Khmelevaya sloboda, where 400 people lived.

In the 1911 description by A.E. Andrievskiy, the Staro-Khmelevskaya sloboda is mentioned. The stone church is cold, the refectory warm, built with the funds of parishioners in 1867. There are three altars, one of which is in the refectory, the main one of St. Demetrius of Thessalonica, and the side altars of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and St. Blasius. There is also a locally revered miraculous icon of the Mother of God "Vladimirskaya."

Today, Staro-Khmelevoye is a modern and well-maintained village connected to Michurinsk by a good asphalt road. More than 900 people live there.
