In the village of Lopatino, located in the Stavropol district of the Samara region, there used to be a wooden church dedicated to the great martyr St. Demetrius of Thessalonica. It was built in 1899 with funds from the parishioners and consecrated in 1900 by Bishop Guriy. The church had a wooden bell tower with four bells. In 1920, Father Alexiy Zimninskiy served there. The church burned down in 1947 due to a lightning strike during a storm.

In June 2002, the residents of Lopatino decided to start the construction of a new church with the same name. On June 11, 2002, a founding meeting was held to establish the parish as a legal entity. The parish was registered in September 2003 and re-registered in February 2006 thanks to the efforts of one of the parishioners. Until 2006, parish activities were not conducted due to the absence of a priest. In November 2006, Archbishop Sergey of Samara and Syzran appointed Priest Sergey Makarov as the rector. In 2007, the construction of a prayer house began, temporarily located in the future refectory of the church, which was completed in 2009. On March 21, 2007, the administration allocated a plot for the construction of the church.
