The construction of the church dates back to the time of Donskoy, the founder of the monastery. In 1752, the abbot of the Dimitriev Monastery, Theodorite, along with the brotherhood and the elders of the estate villages, requested permission to rebuild the dilapidated wooden church of St. Great Martyr Demetrius at the same site, using old timber. On May 18 of the same year, a decree was issued by the Spiritual Order in the name of the cathedral protodeacon Nikita.

In October 1763, the Dimitriev Church is already listed as stone in the inventory of the Dimitriev Monastery. It mentions an iconostasis with carved royal doors and gilded cornices, as well as an ancient image of St. Great Martyr Demetrius with a silver and gilded cover.

In 1829, the church was renovated and consecrated on November 12. The iconostasis now has three tiers. In 1847, a silver cover weighing 12 pounds was placed on the church icon of St. Demetrius, and in 1854, the walls of the temple were adorned with paintings.

Around 1920, the church was closed and used by the collective farm 'Krasnaya Nov' as a storage for grain and vegetables. Later, it was returned along with the monastery. The church of St. Great Martyr Demetrius was consecrated again on October 21, 1995, by Archbishop Simon of Ryazan and Kasimov. From 2013 to 2015, the church was painted, and in December 2015, a new iconostasis was installed.
