The church dedicated to Saint Prince Dmitry Donskoy was founded in 2002 with the blessing of Bishop Kirill of Tula and Belev. At his request and at the initiative of the parishioners, the administration of the city of Donskoy provided a former store building for conducting services. On April 29, 2002, Bishop Kirill, along with the clergy, held a prayer service and blessed the opening of the church. The first liturgy in the new church took place on Holy Thursday, April 2, 2002, and gathered many people. Gradually, the church building was brought into order: the interior spaces were expanded, and both interior and exterior finishing were completed. In 2004, a dome with a cross was installed on the church.

On May 14, 2004, a spring was consecrated near the Novougólny microdistrict of the city of Donskoy in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Unexpected Joy." Every year on December 22, the clergy of the church conduct a water blessing service with the reading of an akathist.
