In the 19th century, in the village of Sanino, near Argunovo, there stood a wooden chapel with ancient icons of the Savior and Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. In 1890, a stone church of the Chernigov Icon of the Mother of God was built here.

On March 25, 1887, Ivan Artemov was born into the family of a village carpenter, Ivan Andreyevich Artemov, who later became a martyr for his faith. After receiving a technical education, he worked for a long time as a builder and cost estimation specialist. After moving to Moscow, Ivan Ivanovich continued to maintain contact with the residents of his native village, where he was known as a deeply religious person.

In 1935, the authorities attempted to close the church in Sanino due to the disbandment of the old church council, but this provoked protests from the believers. A new council was formed, which included Ivan Artemov. They filed a complaint with the Regional Executive Committee, which recognized their requests as legitimate and ordered the church to be reopened, the priest to be registered, and the community to be allowed to fulfill their religious needs. The church was reopened, but the community faced financial difficulties due to taxes. Ivan Ivanovich helped raise funds among Orthodox acquaintances in Moscow, which later turned against him.

In Moscow, his apartment often provided shelter for priests from closed churches, monks, and believers. This attracted the attention of the NKVD, and it soon became clear that he was conducting religious discussions among workers and collecting money for the church. On August 22, 1937, Ivan Artemov was arrested and imprisoned in Butyrka prison. In early September, the investigator interrogated his neighbors and Ivan Ivanovich himself.

On October 7, 1937, the NKVD troika sentenced him to execution. Ivan Artemov was executed on October 14, 1937, at the Butovo firing range near Moscow.

On the outskirts of the village of Starovo, on the road from Sanino to Ilyinskoye, a roadside chapel has been preserved.
