Church of the Annunciation in Tumbotino

Фото 1
At the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, a stone church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built here in the style of provincial classicism. This temple belongs to a common type in Russia, where an octagon is raised on a high square base. In a historical report from 1904 from the Central Archive of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, it is stated: "Built by the efforts of parishioners in 1800. The building is stone with a similar bell tower, sturdy, but not very spacious in winter. An iron fence on a stone foundation has been installed around the church instead of the old wooden one. There is a wooden watchman's hut by the church. The temple has three altars: a summer one in honor of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a winter one in honor of the Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian, and a third in honor of the Venerable Fathers Zosimas and Savvatiy, the Solovetsky miracle workers. There are sufficient church utensils. According to the 1885 staff, the clergy consists of a priest, a deacon, and a psalmist. The land associated with the church includes: 1 desyatina 800 sazhen of homestead land, 3 desyatiny of hayfields, and 32 desyatiny 484 sazhen of arable land. There are no affiliated churches or libraries. There are no brotherhoods or charities in the parish. The number of male parishioners is 1718, and female parishioners is 1947." With the advent of Soviet power, the church building, like other churches of the former Russian Empire, passed into state ownership, which seized its main values under the pretext of helping the starving and strengthening the economy. The community was forced to rent its church and pay taxes on it. In the early 1930s, persecution of the church began. In January 1929, a resolution of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party was issued on measures to strengthen anti-religious work, and in February 1930, a resolution of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee and the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR was issued on combating counter-revolutionary elements in religious associations. This led to the mass closure of churches and repression against the clergy. Priest Rafil Pavlovich Vinogradov, who served in the Annunciation church, was arrested on March 18, 1930, on charges of counter-revolutionary activity and shot in May of the same year. Along with him, three parishioners were convicted and shot: the church elder Vasily Filatov, Gavriil Gusev, and Ivan Rodionov. Their guilt lay not so much in secret meetings as in resisting the demolition of the church fence, allegedly necessary for the construction of a hospital. After the execution, the fence was dismantled and used as building materials. The temple continued to operate, but in 1936 it was decided to demolish it. The bells were thrown down, the upper tiers of the bell tower were dismantled, and the cross from the dome was removed in 1937. The building was not destroyed but was converted into a bakery, with new premises added to the old walls. In 1991, the Annunciation church was reopened for worship and registered with the Main Department of Justice of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. In 1996, restoration of the temple began, and by 1999 all lost architectural elements were restored, and the Soviet extensions were demolished. In January 1997, a dome with a cross was installed on the church. In 1998, the restoration of the bell tower began, and in 1999, the bells, donated to the church by benefactors, returned to it. The church was consecrated by Metropolitan Nikolai on December 10, 1999.
