Church of Archangel Michael in Arkhangelsk Pogost

Фото 1
Located 16 kilometers east of Kirzhach, in the village of Khalino, is the Church of Archangel Michael, which now belongs to the Kirzhach Annunciation Monastery. This church existed as early as the beginning of the 16th century, and in 1628 it is mentioned as "the church of Michael the Archangel on Utroke," although the river is now more commonly called Utrika. Initially, the church was wooden, and the construction of the stone church began in 1814. The warm chapels were completed and consecrated in honor of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos and St. Spyridon of Trimythous in 1829, while the church itself in honor of Archangel Michael was completed in 1837. The parish included the village of Funikova Gora and the villages of Mitino, Khalino, Novoselki, and Novinki. In 1885, a parish school was opened at the church, where 60 students were enrolled in 1896.

The Church of Archangel Michael is closely connected with the history of the Prokudin-Gorsky family, one of the well-known surnames of the Kirzhach land. Funikova Gora was their ancestral estate and was part of the parish of Arkhangelsk Pogost for several centuries. Mikhail Ivanovich Prokudin, a writer and diplomat, was the first to add the prefix "Gorsky" to the surname, named after the estate. He traveled to negotiate in Turkey in 1760. His nephew, Alexei Neofitovich Prokudin, a participant in the Battle of Austerlitz, miraculously survived this battle and, upon returning home, became a generous benefactor, helping Orthodox churches. He was acquainted with St. Seraphim of Sarov and often visited him in the Sarov Monastery. However, the most famous of the Prokudin-Gorsky family was Sergey Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorsky, the inventor of color photography and the personal photographer of the royal family. By order of the emperor, he traveled almost all over Russia, creating a unique collection of color photographs from the early 20th century.

In the past, the church possessed rich utensils, sacred vestments, icons, and liturgical books, among which were ancient Oktoikh and Apostol with seals from 1678 and 1684, respectively. Until the early 20th century, church documents, copies of metric books from 1803, and confession lists from 1829 were preserved. During the Soviet era, the church was closed, its interior destroyed, and it gradually fell into disrepair. Now the church is assigned to the Holy Annunciation Kirzhach Monastery and is gradually being restored thanks to the efforts of the sisters of the monastery.
