Alexander Nevsky Church in Nizhny Salda

The initiator and leader of the construction of the Alexander Nevsky Church in Nizhny Salda was Konstantin Polenov, the manager of the Nizhnesaldinsky plant. In one of the elevated places in the city, lightning strikes often occurred, causing fires. Polenov decided to build a tall brick building with a lightning rod at this location. In the 1880s, fundraising for the construction began: money was withheld from the salaries of the plant workers and donations were collected from the townspeople. The church project in the Russian-Byzantine style was developed by the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, and the architect was Sergey Sergeyevich Kozlov from Yekaterinburg. Construction began in the mid-1890s. Red bricks were made in the fireproof workshop, and the mortar was made using slaked lime, sour milk, and rotten eggs. In 1902, a second-year student from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, Vladimir Kuznetsov, came to Nizhny Salda to paint the church.

Interestingly, the floor tiles of the church were brought from different places. The floor in the altar and the altar part of the two chapels was laid with red marble tiles from Nizhny Tagil, while the remaining tiles were delivered from France. Research showed that the tiles were made in the department of Saône-et-Loire, in the town of Paray-le-Monial. It is believed that they were ordered by Grum-Grzhimailo, who traveled abroad three times at the end of the 19th century to purchase equipment for the new rolling mill in Nizhny Salda. He visited factories in Germany, France, and Belgium and did not forget about the church construction. The tiles were laid by a talented mechanic of the plant, Iosif Mikhailovich Smirnov, and they continue to impress parishioners to this day.

The consecration of the church took place on May 24, 1905 (June 6 in the new style). This event was reported in the Yekaterinburg Diocesan Gazette: The Bishop arrived at the Nizhny Tagil plant and headed to the Nizhny Salda plant, where he was ceremoniously met by the clergy and townspeople. In the evening, he held an all-night vigil in the new church, and the next day the consecration and divine liturgy took place.

Until 1929, the rector of the church was Fadey Avdeyev. In March 1930, a tragic story began: the cross was removed from the main dome, the bells were thrown down, the bell tower and two side towers were destroyed. After its closure, the church housed the headquarters of OSAVIAKHIM, and from 1931, a defense house operated here. From 1933 to 1974, the church building housed the cinema 'Iskra'. Later, there were plans to establish a museum, but this did not succeed, and the building gradually fell into disrepair. Only minor repair work was carried out by enthusiasts.

In 1980, the church building was placed under state protection of local significance. Nine years later, at the request of the believers, the church was handed over to the Orthodox community, and restoration work began. Currently, the rector of the church is Father Mikhail Parigin, who is actively working on its revival. This brings great joy to all who witness the revival of the shrine.
