The Alexander Nevsky Gorodets Church is located in the southeastern part of the Vologda region, in the very center of the village of Kichmengsky Gorodok. This village is situated on the banks of the Yuga River, 100 kilometers south of Veliky Ustyug. The first mention of Kichmengsky Gorodok dates back to 1468, and until the 17th century, it served as a fortress protecting these lands from enemy raids.

The church, a small Orthodox temple with twelve gilded crosses, was built from 1882 to 1895 with funds raised by local residents. Its construction was dedicated to the memory of the murdered Tsar Alexander II, and after its consecration in 1895, the temple was named after Saint Prince Alexander Nevsky. During the period of active struggle against religion, the church was decapitated and turned into a carpentry workshop. In the early 1990s, the restored building housed a local history museum.
