The church in honor of the holy righteous prince Alexander Nevsky was built on the grounds of the city cemetery in Pokrovsk in the mid-19th century. It was closed and destroyed in 1931. In 1962, the cemetery was liquidated, and residential buildings were constructed in its place.

Today, the church again serves its historical function as a cemetery church. It is located at an active cemetery on the outskirts of the city in the SХI area. The foundation and the basement part of the building were laid in the fall of 2004, and construction was completed in five months in 2005.

On April 21, 2005, His Grace Longin, Bishop of Saratov and Volsk, together with the dean of the Pokrovsky district, Archpriest Vasily Strelkov, and Priest Konstantin Buryakov, as well as with the participation of the mayor of Engels, Mikhail Lysenko, laid a commemorative capsule in the foundation of the church.

On June 23, 2005, Bishop Longin, together with Archpriest Vasily Strelkov and Priest Konstantin Buryakov, consecrated the bells of the church. The ceremony was attended by the clergy of Engels, patrons, and builders.

On September 12, 2005, the first service was held in the new church on the feast day. The Divine Liturgy was performed by Bishop Longin, assisted by Archpriest Vasily Strelkov and Priest Konstantin Buryakov.

In 2006, a church fence was built, and granite floors were laid in the church.

The parish includes a prison church in honor of the Protection of the Mother of God.

In 2007, repair and restoration work was carried out at the parish: priming, puttying, painting of the interior walls, icon painting and artistic decoration, installation of the iconostasis, and other works.
