After the construction of the railway and the opening of the Petushki station in 1897, a school for railway workers was established. In 1898, a separate building was constructed for it. On July 15, 1899, the construction of the church began next to this building, which was completed and consecrated on July 9, 1900, in honor of Saint Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra, the Miracle Worker.

After the revolution, the church was closed, looted, and destroyed. Its restoration began in 2000, when a blessing for the revival of the church was received on February 10. This good deed was blessed by His Eminence Evlogy, Archbishop of Vladimir and Suzdal. On October 26, 2000, the first and so far the only church in honor of Saint Athanasius of Kovrov was laid. The bishop also consecrated a chapel in honor of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, where services were initially held. On January 7, 2002, on the day of the Nativity of Christ, the first Divine Liturgy took place in the new church. On February 10 of the same year, a cross was installed on the dome of the church. On October 26, 2002, the great consecration of the church took place, conducted by the Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus, Metropolitan Philaret of Minsk and Slutsk, and Archbishop Evlogy of Vladimir and Suzdal, with the participation of numerous clergy.
