Tsar's Gate (Triumphal Arch) in Saratov

On September 9, 2022, the restored Triumphal Arch was opened in Saratov, which is a copy of the historical structure built in 1871 for the visit of Emperor Alexander II. More than a hundred years ago, the site of the arch was Nikolsky Rise, which descended to the Volga. The arch, which became a symbol of the city in the late 19th century, was located at the intersection of streets now known as Chernyshevsky and Radishchev. This structure was also called the "Tsar's Gate." One of the supports of the original arch was 12 centimeters wider than the other, as revealed by the study of old photographs, and this feature has been preserved in the restored version. The columns of the arch featured eagles painted on metal panels, and in the new version, the coats of arms are also made according to historical data: they are painted, not forged. In the 1920s, when SarGRES was being built, the arch was demolished.

The decision to recreate the arch was made in July 2021, and construction began at that time. Architects and builders aimed to recreate the historical appearance of the arch as accurately as possible, consulting with local historians and studying archives. Eagles from the time of the Russian Empire appeared on the brick supports, and the area at the foot of the arch was paved with cobblestones found during the reconstruction of Kirov Avenue. Architectural lighting has also been installed.

Initially, the arch was wooden and built in 1863 for the visit of Tsarevich Nikolai Alexandrovich, son of Alexander II. In 1871, the "Tsar's Gate" was erected from red brick, which was later plastered and painted white.

Merchant Vasily Mamin informed the city council in 1872 that he financed the construction of the arch in 1871. In 1895, the city administration appealed to the construction department with a request to plaster the arch, as it had lost its attractive appearance. Architects Sergey Tikhomirov, Alexey Salko, and Yuri Terlikov proposed to plaster the arch to improve its appearance and protect it from the weather.

Preserved photographs and postcards testify that the triumphal arch was a popular symbol of the city, and the restored arch is expected to become a new attraction for Saratov.
