Tsarevokokshaisk is the former name of the modern city, which was renamed in 1919. In the Middle Ages, a defensive fortress was built on the site of the current kremlin to protect the city. However, its wooden walls could not withstand the test of time and were completely destroyed. Since 1919, this place was called Bazaar Square, and in 2008 it was renamed Revolution Square. The kremlin was erected in 2009 and consists of a complex of four red brick towers connected by walls, forming a rectangular inner courtyard. Inside the kremlin stands the only monument in the world to Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich, who founded the city of Tsarevokokshaisk (now Yoshkar-Ola) in 1584. The author of the bronze statue, which is 3.5 meters tall, is A. Kovalchuk, the chairman of the artists' union. Along the walls of the inner territory of the complex, there is an exhibition of artillery and an exposition on the history of the Mari people. In the open niches around the perimeter of the complex, there are stands with information about the city's history. In the summer, there is a sales exhibition called 'Mari Beekeeping.' The closed areas of the kremlin are used for temporary exhibitions. Throughout the year, reconstructed artillery pieces from the 16th to 19th centuries are displayed in the kremlin square. Across the road from the kremlin is the Ascension Cathedral.
