The chapel dedicated to the Yaroslavl Icon of the Mother of God was restored from ruins and relocated from the village of Pogorelki. The history of the icon's origin is little known. According to tradition, it was brought to Yaroslavl in the 13th century by the holy princes Vasily and Konstantin.

In 1501, the relics of the brothers were found and placed between the pillars of the new stone Assumption Cathedral under the family icons, including the Yaroslavl one. Later, in honor of this icon, the lower church of the Prophet Elijah in the center of Yaroslavl was consecrated.

Some of the decor from the old chapel has been preserved. The location was chosen so that travelers along the Volga could visit the shrine. On the day of the chapel's consecration, the ceremony was conducted by Bishop Benjamin of Rybinsk and Danilov, assisted by deacons Ilya Sleptsov and Nikita Vedernikov.
