The Holy Ascension Kremensky Men's Monastery is located in a picturesque spot at the foot of a mountain, ten kilometers from the village of Novogriigorievskaya, upstream of the Don River. It is one of the oldest monasteries of the All-Great Don Army. According to legend, in the 16th century, seven monk brothers lived in a cave at this site and were killed by robbers. When locals later dug pits here, they found human bones. According to another version of the legend, seven brothers who traded along the Don were killed here during the time of Yermak Timofeyevich. In 1830, a merchant from another area living in the Kremenskaya stanitsa erected a "kamplichka," a quadrangular chapel without a floor or ceiling, sheathed and covered with planks, three arshins high, with a wooden cross on top. In 1859, the residents of Kremenskaya stanitsa built a stone quadrangular chapel at this site. It was destroyed during the Soviet era, as was the chapel of the "Ascension of the Mother of God." Despite numerous prohibitions, services were held annually at the site of the destroyed chapels, and pilgrims came here, closely monitored by representatives of the Council for the Affairs of the Russian Orthodox Church under the USSR Council of Ministers in the Stalingrad region. Their reports indicate that pilgrimages to the site of the "7 brothers" chapel did not cease. In the 1940s, services and prayers were organized by a former non-staff priest from the city of Frolovo, Denisov F., and hieromonk P.T. Terentyev with hierodeacon S.B. Korotkov from the Perikopsky farm. The chapel was rebuilt in 2004.
