In May 2009, during archaeological excavations, the burial site of Saint Joasaph was discovered. Archaeologists found remnants of the tomb's walls and elements of the room's decoration. The tomb was located in one of the chapels of the Holy Trinity Cathedral, which was destroyed during the Soviet era.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the saint's canonization, which will be celebrated on September 17, 2011, it was decided to excavate the cave and build a chapel above it. The chapel's project was approved by Archbishop John of Belgorod and Stary Oskol in December 2009. The architects envisioned that the chapel would be an exact replica of the southwest chapel of the Holy Trinity Cathedral, where the tomb of Joasaph of Belgorod was located. During the work, the walls of the cave were cleaned and reinforced, and the builders began the construction of the future chapel's walls. The tomb is planned to be covered with a glass dome featuring an angel. There will also be an underground passage connecting the tomb with the chapel.

The area around the chapel and tomb will be paved, with lighting and benches installed. It is planned to outline the contours of the Holy Trinity Cathedral, which was destroyed before the revolution, with its boundaries marked by white stone. The construction and landscaping work will be completed by City Day. During the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the canonization of Saint Joasaph, the chapel and tomb will become important pilgrimage sites.

In the past, emperors Alexander I and Nicholas II visited the burial site of Saint Joasaph to pay their respects. The last Russian emperor prepared and conducted the canonization of Saint Joasaph.
