The main attraction of Akhtubinsk is the memorial complex "Wing of Icarus," located in a picturesque spot on the banks of the Akhtuba River. It is also called "To the Test Pilots of the Past, Present, and Future." The complex was opened in the fall of 1971 and has an interesting history. The idea to create this architectural ensemble belongs to the head of the GNIKI of the Air Force, which from 1970 to 1978 was called GLITS, the honored military pilot of the USSR, Major General Ivan Dmitrievich Gaidaenko, and his deputy Stepan Anastasovich Mikoyan.

The design of the complex was entrusted to Volgograd sculptor Viktor Fetisov, a student of the famous sculptor E.V. Vuchetich, who is now a people's artist of Russia. The central element of the composition, a steel wing symbolizing humanity's aspiration for flight and the exploration of the unknown, is dedicated to "Testers who did not return from flight." Nearby are four black granite steles with the names of the fallen testers. This place in the square next to the memorial is considered sacred, as it is connected to the memory of test pilots who did not return from flight, and therefore it was decided to build a chapel here.

On September 21, 2013, Bishop Antoniy of Akhtubinsk and Yenotayevsk laid the foundation stone for the future chapel at the "Wing of Icarus" memorial complex. Funds for the construction were collected from all over the world, but a significant portion was contributed by the servicemen of the State Flight Test Center named after V.P. Chkalov. On September 20, 2014, the chapel in honor of the Archangel Michael was consecrated. A special temple icon was written for it, depicting the Archangel Michael and the heavenly host behind him.
