The memorial chapel of the Protection of the Holy Virgin, located near the village of Gusek-Pogorelovo in the Priznachenko rural settlement, was opened and consecrated on August 5, 2003. It was designed by architect L. Kolesnikova.
The January events of 1943 in the village of Gusek-Pogorelovo left a deep tragic mark in the history of the Great Patriotic War in Belgorod region.
On January 26, 630 people, including prisoners of war and civilians, were herded into the local school. The walls of the building were doused with gasoline and set on fire. Around the school, Nazis with machine guns and automatic rifles shot anyone who tried to escape by jumping out of the windows. When, in the following days, the German invaders were driven out by the Soviet forces, local residents buried the burned and shot bodies that remained in the burned school in a mass grave.
