The Chapel of Our Lady of Kazan is located in the center of Yaroslavl on the banks of the Kotorosl River, in front of the Holy Gates of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery. This monument, created by architect G. L. Dainov, was solemnly opened in August 1997 in honor of the 385th anniversary of the people's militia's march on Moscow. In 1612, a popular militia was gathered in Nizhny Novgorod to liberate the capital from invaders, and Yaroslavl served as a temporary capital when the militia stopped at the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery. The monument is established in memory of the militia's exit from the monastery on July 27, 1612, led by Minin and Pozharsky, which headed towards Moscow through the Holy Gates. The Chapel of Our Lady of Kazan in Yaroslavl serves both as a chapel, with images of Christian saints, and as a historical monument, as inside, words of gratitude to the People's Militia of 1612 from their descendants are engraved on a slab. The chapel also features a stained glass window depicting the icon of Our Lady of Kazan, which is clearly visible from afar.
