Clock columns, which can be found on rural roads in the Nizhny Novgorod region, are most often made of brick. However, in the village of Tatarka in the Semenov district, there is one special column. It is made from a large basalt boulder and is adorned with carvings and inscriptions.

According to local residents, the village was predominantly Old Believer in the past and was famous for its craftsmen, especially woodcarvers. Almost every house had a workshop where wooden utensils, such as spoons and bowls, were made. These products, called "belye," were sold for further processing. One of the craftsmen, a carpenter named Skvortsov, decided to leave a mark of his craftsmanship not in wood, but in stone. He chose one of the boulders of Scandinavian origin that had remained here since the Ice Age for his work. According to the date on the stone column, the master created and installed this monument in the center of the village in 1888.

During the Soviet era, the column was attempted to be used for economic purposes. Old-timers recall that it was planned to be broken into small stones for road filling. The boulder was loaded onto a cart and taken away, but halfway there, the horse refused to go any further until the stone was dropped on the roadside. There it lay for a long time. In recent days, the relic has returned to Tatarka: it was installed at the entrance to the village. Locals say it has become a true landmark. Now tourist buses stop at the column, and guides tell the story of this unique monument.
