On August 19, 2001, on the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ataman Matvey Ivanovich Platov of the All-Great Don Army, a solemn opening of the bust of this outstanding Russian commander and Cossack leader took place in the stanitsa of Starocherkasskaya. The bust, made of bronze, is installed on a granite pedestal next to the Resurrection Cathedral, which is a symbol of Starocherkasskaya.

The monument was created by the Rostov sculptor Anatoly Skarnir, who responded to the request to immortalize the memory of the native of the former Cossack capital, previously known as the city of Cherkassk.
