In the Don city of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, one of the most famous landmarks is the bronze bust of the renowned Cossack ataman Matvey Ivanovich Platov, which was installed in 2003.

The monument to Matvey Ivanovich Platov appeared here not only because he was a celebrated Don ataman, but also because he founded the Kamenskaya stanitsa at the current location of the city of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky. Before that, the stanitsa was located on the opposite bank of the Northern Donets.

The square where the bust is installed was formed after the demolition of the Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul, the construction of which was halted due to the onset of World War I. The square was named Petropavlovskaya. During the Soviet era, it was named after the Bolshevik commander Shchadenko, but in 2010, at the request of local Cossacks, it was renamed in honor of Ataman Platov along with the adjacent park. At that time, in addition to Platov's bust, a memorial stele with the inscription 'Platov Square' and a plaque explaining its name were also installed here.
