The brotherly building of the 17th century is a stone house with a wooden roof, which housed two-story monastic cells. Its construction was completed by Kostroma masters Fyodor Grigoryev and Georgy Anisimov in 1684 and 1689.

The buildings on the territory of the Znamensky Monastery at the Old Tsar's Court have repeatedly undergone destruction and restoration. During the Patriotic War of 1812, the monastery was looted by Napoleon's soldiers; however, services continued in its lower part. After the war, architect Dmitry Borisov was responsible for restoring the complex.

In 1908 and 1909, the brotherly building was sold to be converted into a rental house. After the addition of two floors, the building almost lost its historical appearance.

Restoration of the building began in the second half of the 20th century when it was decided to restore significant architectural monuments of Zaryadye during the design of the "Russia" hotel. Work was carried out from the mid-1970s until the early 2000s.

In 2017, the facades were fully restored, and in 2018, the interiors of the building. Now the appearance of the building corresponds to the beginning of the last century: the entrance on the west side has been restored, while the northern entrance has been bricked up. The restorers have tidied up the window grilles, copper chimneys on the flues, as well as the staircase and footbridge from Varvarka Street leading to the building.

The foundation has been strengthened, the brickwork restored, and the plaster updated. The triangular pediments above the windows of the cells and the inter-floor cornices have been restored. The wooden roof and other elements of the building have been treated with protective solutions. Inside the brotherly building, the original interiors, wooden floors, internal doors, door frames, and window openings have been recreated.
