The Virgin Mary Nativity Convent is located 7 kilometers from the city of Kondrovo, in the village of Baryatino. It was founded in 1995 at a church dedicated to the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos.

The church itself was built in 1796 with funds from the widow of Major General Anna Vasilyevna Pozdnyakova and is an example of the Empire style. It has two altars: the main one in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos and the second in honor of Saints Cosmas and Damian of Rome.

After the 1917 revolution, the church operated until 1938, when the abbot Archimandrite Euphron (Fomin) and the chairman of the church council Andrei Anokhin were arrested and executed on false charges, while the starosta Elena Kondratieva received a 10-year prison sentence. After the church was closed, its property was confiscated, and the orchard was destroyed. During the occupation, the Germans used the church building to keep livestock.

In the 1950s, the church was reopened. Its restoration was undertaken by Priest Andrei Pavlikov, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War. He served in the church for 17 years and cared for monks from closed monasteries. Initially, services were held in the chapel of Cosmas and Damian, and later the main altar was restored.

On February 28, 1972, Hieromonk Arkady (Afonin) became the rector of the church. He served until 1991 when he was appointed Bishop of South Sakhalin. By the blessing of Bishop Donat (Shchegolev), Father Arkady began to establish a women's monastic community, inviting experienced nuns. The community included nuns such as Anastasia (Kuzmina), Martha, and others. Young sisters also joined, with some taking monastic vows.

By the early 1990s, only 4 residents remained in the community. On April 4, 1993, nuns from the Holy Nicholas Chernoostrov Monastery arrived to strengthen the community. The elder sister became Nun Theophila (Lepeshinskaya). The community began to develop, and new buildings were constructed. On December 26, 1995, it was transformed into a women's monastery, the Virgin Mary Nativity Convent, with Nun Theophila as the abbess.

Daily services are held at the monastery, and life is regulated by an internal Statute. During the autumn-winter period, the sisters study theology and other disciplines. The library contains about 7000 books.

The monastery complex is expanding: a house for the priest, a sisterhood building, and a livestock yard have been built. A subsidiary farm and an orchard have been established.

Every year, the monastery hosts seminars for children and teenagers, where they learn church reading and singing, participate in services, and perform obediences.

The sisters care for elderly parishioners and provide assistance to those in need. Currently, there are 12 residents living in the monastery.
