The Battle of Austerlitz, which took place on November 20 (December 2) 1805, became a key battle between Napoleon's army and the forces of the Third Anti-French Coalition. This event is known in history as the "Battle of the Three Emperors," as the armies of Austrian Emperor Francis II and Russian Emperor Alexander I opposed Napoleon. The battle ended with a complete defeat of the allied forces.
The Battle of Austerlitz, along with the battles of Gaugamela and Cannae, became an example of a decisive victory over a numerically superior opponent.
A memorial in the form of the Mausoleum of Peace with statues of soldiers and a vaulted chapel has been erected at the site of the battle. Previously, there was a museum displaying samples of military uniforms and weapons from all participating countries, including Russia.
In François Gérard's painting "Napoleon at Austerlitz," General Jean Rapp is depicted presenting the captured Prince Nikolai Repnin-Volkonsky to Napoleon after the attack of the Russian cavalry guards. In the background, Napoleon's Mamluks can be seen with captured banners. The painting is housed in the Palace of Versailles.
