Besedinskoye (Ratskoye) Hillfort in Shekhovtsovo

Фото 1
The archaeological complex Ratskoye Hillfort is located on the right bank of the Rat River, between the villages of Shekhovtsovo and Gorodishche, and includes a hillfort and a settlement. The first settlements in this area emerged as early as the 4th-5th centuries BC.

Besedinskoye (Ratskoye) Hillfort, also known as "Tarelочка", is associated with the ancient Russian city of Ratun (Ratno), mentioned in written sources. Excavations show that the fortified settlement existed continuously here from the 9th to the first half of the 11th century, and was then renewed in the 12th century. The hillfort is surrounded by an 8-meter high rampart.

Until recently, numismatic finds at Besedinskoye Hillfort were scarce. Over more than a century of research, only one fragment of an Abbasid dirham from 777-778 was found. However, in the last two to three years, the situation has changed. In 1998, a clay pot with silver Kufic coins was accidentally discovered near the rampart of the hillfort. The treasure, unfortunately, was dispersed, but it contained at least two hundred dirhams and their fragments. Among the one and a half hundred coins available for study, there were only four Abbasid dirhams, the earliest of which was minted during the caliphate of Mutamid (870-892). The majority of the coins belonged to emirs from the Samanid dynasty and their vassals. The latest coins from the treasure date to the year 329 of the Hijra (940-941) and were minted in Shash.

The most interesting numismatic find was made in 1999. Among the raised material, a silver coin of Vladimir Svyatoslavich was discovered. The coin was in poor condition: the edges were broken, and the silver had oxidized. However, its identification posed no difficulties. It is a silver coin of the 1st type, related to the early emission of ancient Russian coins. The obverse features the prince on a throne with a cross in hand and a trident over his shoulder. Only six letters remain from the inscription "VLADIMIR A SE EGO SREBRO". The reverse depicts Christ. Such silver coins were minted around 990 when Prince Vladimir introduced Rus to the circle of Christian states and began issuing his own coins.

Since 1960, Ratskoye Hillfort has been protected by the state as a monument of federal significance in archaeology.
