One of the oldest monasteries in the Yaroslavl region is the Resurrection Monastery in Uglich, founded in the 15th century by the hieromonk Dmitry. Over five centuries of its existence, the monastery has gone through many trials: it served as an important defensive point during the Time of Troubles, was closed twice, and was revived again.
The first buildings of the Resurrection Monastery appeared shortly after its foundation, but none have survived to this day. The oldest church of the monastery dates back to the second half of the 17th century. During the construction of a new complex, the monastery was relocated and is now situated in a different place. In 1764, the monastery was disbanded, and its churches became parish churches, but soon the monastery was restored. The second blow came during the Soviet period when the monastery suffered greatly and remained closed for a long time.
The architectural ensemble of the monastery consists of three parts connected by a stone gallery. The main jewel of the monastery is the five-domed cathedral in honor of the Resurrection of the Lord, which is also the oldest church. This cathedral rises above the other buildings and creates an impression of grandeur, astonishing with its beauty. It is richly decorated with architectural elements, including preserved tiles, and the domes are a true gem of architecture.
On the territory of the monastery, there is also a bell tower that harmoniously complements the cathedral, as well as the churches of Mary of Egypt and the Odihria, which complete the ensemble. All of this is surrounded by low stone walls. The monastery complex, painted white, is a decoration of the city, although much of its appearance was lost in the last century.
