The museum began its work in the spring of 1982 in the building of the library of SPTU-24 on Lenin Street under the leadership of Innokentiy Petrovich Zherikov. Exhibits were transferred from schools No. 1, 47 and from public organizations. Among the exhibits were antique items: irons, jugs, cast-iron pots, spinning wheels, and other household items. Since 1987, the museum has been headed by Valentina Ivanovna Pokrasenko.

On February 27, 1991, the museum received state status, and its official opening took place on April 30 of the same year. In 2001 and 2012, the museum was managed by Natalia Nikolaevna Zhuravel. Since 2012, the director has been Mikhail Anatolyevich Ignatov.

Today, the museum features exhibitions: "Nature of Baraba", "Peasant Hut", "Barabintsy in the Great Patriotic War", "Artists of Siberia", "History of the City of Barabinsk Formation". There are also exhibitions: "Tools of Peasants from the Late 19th and Early 20th Century", "Shop", "Furniture from the Late 19th Century". The museum organizes exhibitions from the funds of the local history and art museums of Novosibirsk, private collections, conducts excursions, meetings with war and labor veterans, as well as with interesting people. Cultural and educational programs have been developed at the museum: "History of the Russian People in Baraba", "Folk Traditions of Our Region", "Museum Chronicle of War Years", "Folk Painting". Within the framework of these programs, museum lessons, lectures, discussions, intellectual games, folklore holidays, and master classes are held.
