In Crimea, many peoples live, including significant diasporas of Karaites and Armenians, who have contributed to the history of the peninsula. Today we will tell you about the ancient Armenian fountain, which for a long time was mistakenly considered Karaite. The history of this fountain is connected to the era of the great Russian artist of Armenian descent Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky, a native of Feodosia, who actively supported urban transformations. At that time, the problem of drinking water in Crimea was as pressing as it is now and required immediate solutions. However, this fountain, unlike more modern water sources, was built in 1586 at the walls of the ancient Armenian church in honor of Archangels Michael and Gabriel. It was erected in memory of a wealthy local Armenian, Khoja Astvatsaturge, and has survived to this day. Over the centuries, the fountain has been restored multiple times, but no significant changes have been made to its appearance. The uniqueness of the fountain lies in its adherence to ancient Armenian traditions and the fact that it is the only monument of its kind in Russia. As for the Armenian church of Archangels Michael and Gabriel, it was built in 1408 and has been well preserved to this day. In pre-revolutionary times, the parish was so wealthy that various books were printed at the church, but this ceased during the Soviet period. Only in the 1990s was the church returned to the Armenian community and it is now active.
