The temple complex "Velikoselsky Kremlin" was formed gradually, starting with the construction of a stone church in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1712. The main funding for the construction was provided by Field Marshal and Prince A.I. Repnin, a close associate of Peter I, who in 1703 gifted the village of Velikoye to his "favorite." The church has five domes and three apses, executed in the traditions of Yaroslavl architecture of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The church housed altars dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God, and the Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessalonica. In the second half of the 18th century, the church was adorned with frescoes. In 1812, a prayer service was held near the church, and a blessing was given to the Yaroslavl militia heading to the Patriotic War. In 1741, with the funds of Pyotr Ivanovich Repnin, the grandson of A.I. Repnin, a stone church was built in honor of the Protection of the Mother of God, with an additional altar dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. This brick church, belonging to the non-columnar, refectory, five-domed structures, is a vivid example of Yaroslavl church architecture of the mid-18th century, combining elements of Naryshkin and Western European Baroque.
