A solid stone building on Bolshaya Sergievskaya Street, now known as Chernyshevsky Street, is a vivid example of Saratov's architectural heritage. Built as grain storage for the 'Trading and Industrial Partnership of the Schmidt Brothers', it symbolizes the era of prosperity for the Schmidt milling dynasty, which became renowned producers of high-quality flour. Their products were in demand far beyond the borders of the Saratov province and the Volga region. The most successful representatives of this dynasty were brothers Andrei and Pyotr, who led the family business in the last quarter of the 19th century. They were descendants of a settler who arrived in the Volga region by decree of Catherine II in the 1760s.

In 1879, a mill building was constructed according to the design of provincial architect Alexei Markovich Salko, which became known as the 'large Schmidt mill'. Alexei Markovich Salko, a well-known proponent of eclectic architectural style, contributed to the creation of the city's unique appearance. In 1897, nearby, the grain warehouse of the 'Schmidt Brothers Trading House' was built, also designed by Salko. This warehouse, located on Chernyshevsky Street, features architectural characteristics such as false windows and has the shape of a rectangular trapezoid. The building consists of three volumes of varying heights: two three-story side volumes with a basement and a central two-story volume with a basement and a metal gable roof. Due to the relief, the basement on the southern facade becomes a full floor, adjacent to a one-story annex.

Over its existence, the building has undergone numerous changes. The three-story western wing was raised by a fourth floor, and another floor was added above the one-story annex of the basement. Later, a one-story annex was added to the eastern facade, and the eastern part of the building was extended in the post-war period. The layout of all volumes of the building is close to the enfilade type, which gives the structure special functionality and aesthetic value.

Saratov, rich in cultural heritage sites, including buildings constructed in the constructivist style, continues to preserve and develop its historical and architectural identity. Efforts to include new sites in the cultural heritage lists are actively underway, allowing for the preservation and popularization of the city's unique heritage.
