Alexanderplatz in Berlin is one of the main squares of the city. Since 1701, it was officially called "Royal Gate Square" (German obsolete: Königs Thor Platz). In 1805, after the visit of Russian Emperor Alexander I in the autumn, Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III renamed the square to its current name.
