Alexandrovskaya Hospital is a two-story building with a high basement, a porch, and two symmetrical ramps leading to Shchipok Street. Since the building was originally constructed as a hospital, the ramps were likely intended for the convenient transportation of patients who could not move independently.

History of Creation and Opening

The construction of the hospital was a lengthy process. On January 10, 1873, at a meeting of the Elected Moscow Merchant Society, elder V. M. Bostanzhoglo proposed to create a 50-bed hospital in Moscow for the treatment of people over 16 years old, regardless of their social status, provided they were Christians. The hospital was named 'Alexandrovskaya' in honor of the recovery of Tsarevich Alexander Alexandrovich from typhus.

The site for the hospital was purchased from honorary citizen M.N. Solodovnikov. Architect Alexander Kaminsky, who was assigned the project, proposed eight options for the placement of the building, taking into account existing structures such as the almshouse and school founded by merchant V.G. Solodovnikov. The construction required the demolition of two factory buildings. In the winter of 1887, the hospital buildings were erected. By the summer of 1888, the hospital was ready, but the opening was delayed due to an unapproved charter. In October 1888, after the disaster in Borki and the miraculous rescue of the royal family, it was decided to expand the hospital by 50 beds. The opening took place on April 14, 1891.

The hospital was built with the latest technical achievements and the experience of European countries in mind. The chief physician became Alexey Vasilyevich Dobrov, who organized the medical department and approved the charter and staff. Treatment at the hospital was free, and it served as a refuge for people with chronic and incurable diseases who needed constant care.

During the Soviet era, the building was transferred to the Vishnevsky Institute of Surgery and was used as a laboratory-research department. Today, it remains part of the Vishnevsky Institute of Surgery complex.
