Vasily Sigorsky: twenty-two years of the Moscow poem.

He was born in Chita in 1902, but from the early 1910s lived in Vologda - and from childhood he was friends with Varlam Shalamov; he carried this friendship throughout his life. He studied at the private studio of E. N. Volkova, then at the Vologda State Art School (1920, 1921), and from 1921 to 1930 at VKhUTEMAS-VKhUTEIN, where he interned in Robert Falk's workshop.

After the institute - he worked in printing and with publishing houses: panels for the Historical Museum and VDNH, participation in the design of the Soviet pavilion at the World Exhibition in Paris, posters, easel and edition graphics. A member of MOSSH since 1932, and of the Union of Artists of the USSR since 1936. The sheets from the 1920s-30s reflect the very era - NEP and collectivization. Then came large cycles: 'Across the Vologda Land', 'In Old Russian Cities', 'Moscow' - urban and rural landscapes, everyday scenes, industry, labor, and leisure. He defined his Moscow program for himself in the mid-fifties and worked on it for twenty-two years. They traveled together: a bus filled with artists went to Red Square, to Zamoskvorechye, and to the outskirts. The creative group was simply called 'The Bus'.

About himself, Sigorsky said that he dedicated his years to searching for the specifics of colored easel graphics: the graphic artist's relationship to color, in his opinion, should be based on completely different principles than in painting.

He died in 1978. In 1980, the artist's widow, Lydia Perova-Sigorskaya, transferred about two hundred of his works to the Vologda Museum-Reserve, and in 1986 - about one hundred works to the Donetsk Art Museum. Today, Sigorsky's sheets are kept in the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum, the State Historical Museum, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, the 'Museum of Moscow' and in a dozen other regional collections.
